I wake in the morning and almost feel a sense of relief, there is just under 700km still to go and one last country but in a strange way, it’s done now. The rules of the race were that to cross into Bulgaria riders are only permitted to take one of 3 ferry crossings, we are not allowed to cross the Danube

I am out and on the bike late at 8.48am the next morning. It is taking me much longer to be packed and organised in the morning, the fatigue is taking its toll but I have only Romania and Bulgaria left to go now.
It is a flat 200km from here to the Romanian border crossing, I have routed across the border

When I set off again at 6.47am it definitely was not my intention to ride almost 700km with more than an Everest’s worth of elevation before sleeping again, but that’s how things panned out.

My alarm wakes me up at 2am, everything throbs, my feet are huge. I take a look out the window and there is another storm, the rain is coming down hard. I put several pillows under my legs to raise my feet, hopefully that might help the swelling. I snooze for a bit longer glad that I’m not out there

4.06 am I am back on the bike and out the door; it is still dark but no longer raining. Today is downhill from the Alps and then flat across the Padan Plain of Northern Italy and across into Slovenia a new country that I have never visited before, today’s profile definitely suits me better.

A big day today, traversing the Alps, Checkpoint 2 is at the base of the legendary climb the Gavia, which means I have to cross the Stelvio national park; I have opted to take my route over the Umbrail pass that is about 250 meters less elevation than the Stelvio pass the highest paved mountain pass

Our great host treats Max, Tim and me to breakfast, we say goodbye and roll down to the river to catch the 8.30am ferry, as expected several other riders are catching the ferry as well, some have ridden all through the night to be here. The crossing is delayed, I do not know why, there was a lot of shouting
