When Benoit de Boigne died, the city decided to build a monument to him. She chose the project by Grenoble-based Pierre-Victor Sappey for its originality and importance despite its low cost.
The 17.65 meter high complex is built of limestone from Saint-Sulpice. It is a curious and clever superimposition of three monuments: a fountain, a column and a statue.
