History of the Schipgat Dunes: This dune area is relatively young, having formed around 2,000 years ago. The dunes shield a deep hollow that is the relic of a creek, literally a "Schipgat" (ship hole).
Shrimp fishermen used the Schipgat to pick the water for centuries.
