The history of Via Indipendenza is closely linked to the history of Bologna and represents one of the most important and symbolic streets of the city. This main road, about 2.5 kilometers long, crosses the historic center and connects Piazza Maggiore, the beating heart of Bologna, with the Central Station.

The construction of Via Indipendenza began in 1861, immediately after the unification of Italy. Its name is a clear reference to the independence achieved by Italy in 1861, when different regions and states united to form a single nation.

The construction of Via Indipendenza involved the demolition of several medieval and Renaissance buildings, as well as parts of the ancient city walls. This road was thought to be a symbol of modernity and development, in line with the desire of a united Italy to project itself into the future.

During the early twentieth century, Via Indipendenza became one of the main streets of Bologna, characterized by elegant shops, cafés and theatres. It quickly became one of the Bolognese's favorite streets for walking and socializing.

During the Fascist period, the road was the subject of urban interventions and changes to emphasize its central role in the city and to celebrate the regime. However, after the Second World War, Bologna became a center of strong political and student activism, and Via Indipendenza was often the site of protests and demonstrations to demand civil and political rights.

In the 1990s, a major terrorist attack hit Bologna station, located at the western end of Via Indipendenza. A bomb explosion killed 85 people and caused serious damage to the station. This tragic event deeply marked the city and the whole of Italy.

Over the years, Via Indipendenza has undergone various transformations and restoration interventions, while maintaining its charm and historical and cultural importance for Bologna. Today, the street is one of the city's main shopping streets, with a lively atmosphere and a variety of shops, restaurants, bars and places of cultural interest.

Via Indipendenza continues to be one of the vital arteries of Bologna, witness of its historical, cultural and social transformations. It is a street that embodies the dynamic and multifaceted identity of this charming Italian city.
