The Cathedral of San Pietro in Bologna is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Bologna. It is located on the Via Indipendenza.
A church already existed in 1028, as evidenced by a pre-Romanesque bell tower with a circular floor plan (modeled on that of Ravenna). The church was destroyed in the great fire of 1141 and rebuilt and reconsecrated by Pope Lucius III in 1184.In 1396, the façade was enhanced by a portico (colonial porch), which was renovated in 1467.By order of Cardinal Gabriele Paleotti, the building was completely renovated in 1575. However, the interventions were so radical that the vaults collapsed in 1599.In 1582, San Pietro was elevated to a cathedral by Pope Gregory XIII.The portico was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century and, by order of Pope Benedict XIV, received a new façade between 1743 and 1747, designed by the architect Alfonso Torreggiani.de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathedrale_von_Bologna
