Ships moored here in front of the former main customs office building, which was built in 1759/60 as the electoral Bavarian salt barn and was destroyed in the air raids of 1944. They unloaded their wares and took on new ones. The goods were then loaded onto the railway, which at that time still had its modest port station at the Salzstadel. After the expansion of the "Swabian Railway" in the direction of Biberach and Ulm from 1851, Friedrichshafen was initially the only railway station on Lake Constance.
