F A Holmes, MA, JP of Buxton, instigated and led the campaign for Dovedale to be made a National Park in the ownership of the National Trust, 1916-1947. Holmes gave lectures about Dovedale and he wrote articles for newspapers to publicise the cause. Land in Stanton Moor and Wheeldon Hill was given to the National Trust by Holmes. He died in 1947 and a plaque to his memory was erected on Lion Face Rock at Dovedale.
The plaques read -
This Dale and Adjoining lands became National Trust Property through the vision of the late F.A. Holmes M.A. J.P. of Buxton who planned to that end from 1916 to 1947.
