I liked this explanation from the Pfalzmuseum für Naturkunde in DÜW (according to the information board on site) best for this phenomenon:
"Water that had dissolved iron-containing substances penetrated the layers of sand. The iron that was carried along was excreted in shells (concentrically) and transformed the loose sand in the area of the deposit into solid sandstone, which can contain up to 30% iron."

Below the castle ruins are the so-called "lightning tubes" made of ochre-colored sandstone, which have been classified as a natural monument. They were given this name because their formation was initially attributed to lightning strikes. Scientific research has, however, refuted this assumption, so that the geological rarity is now considered a mineralogical phenomenon that is due to sintering and erosion. (Source: wiki)
Very impressive and particularly pretty at the moment with the poppy flowers in between. ‼️Please be careful, as it is located directly on a winding road‼️

Interesting stone formations below the Battenburg - it was once assumed that the stones were formed by lightning.
