Erlabrunn probably got its name from the formerly rich stock of alders in the "Erelbrunn" stream, which flows into the Steinbach in the locality. In the 16th century there was already a hustle and bustle in today's town centre. Here at the Steinbach, Seifner struck gold. They "soaped through" gravel, sand and gravel for tin grits. The black tin ore crystals washed out of the rubble were called pearl barley. In 1616 Erlabrunn was mentioned as a tin mine.

After reunification, a separate small market place was created, next to it is the newly built hotel "Alte Schleiferei".
The fountain on the market square, made of two grindstones, is used to extract wood pulp.
In summer there is a covered town pyramid with plenty of local information.
The place is particularly worth seeing during the Advent season.
