The Espérance slag heap is an old slag heap 82 meters high, started at the beginning of the 19th century. It belonged to the Espérance et Bonne-Fortune coal mine until 1990, when it became the property of the municipality of Saint-Nicolas.

The Espérance slag heap is located in Saint-Nicolas, in the heart of the Liège industrial basin. Despite the dominance of black locust woods, which are generally very poor in biodiversity, the slag heap presents a significant diversity of flora and fauna. Several vulnerable or threatened plant species in Wallonia are still present there, such as the chairmaker’s bulrush (Schoenoplectus lacustris) and the lanceolate willowherb (Epilobium lanceolatum). The implementation of management measures could restore favorable conditions for communities linked to sunny mobile slopes and promote the return of certain disappeared species.
