The first stage of the Beacons Way falls into two segments (of 1km and approx. 5km respectively) along with Offa's Dyke Path, one of those other long-distance walks (285km) in the west of England.
The name refers to King Offa who ruled Mercia in the 8th century. The causeway was supposed to mark the border between his Anglo-Saxon kingdom and the Welsh kingdom of Powys.

It is often about eight meters wide and is elevated about 2.5 m above the lakes / wetlands.

The path starts in the northern Bay of Liverpool and ends at the mouth of the Severn, to date the southernmost point of the border between Wales and England.
