    Here, after 25 kilometers of flow, the Steinau flows into the Elbe-Lübeck Canal (ELK).

    The largest water systems here in the area are those of the Steinau and the Linau. Both bodies of water have a flow length of around 25 and 30 km. The Linau flows a little further south into the ELK.

    The Steinau is at the same time the largest and one of the most important remaining retreat areas for near-natural stream communities in the processing area and in the Duchy of Lauenburg district itself. The body of water has several spring catchment areas in different natural areas.

    The Steinau itself has its source in the heart of the Duchy of Lauenburg near Talkau north of the A24 at the police station.
