The place Großpötzschau goes back to a Slavic settlement, in which the Malberg, which is located on today's north-western outskirts of the place, served as a refuge and burial place with its ramparts. This old Sorbian settlement is likely to have arisen as early as 600. In the 12th century, Christian German colonialists settled in this area and in this place. During this time, the first church building on the site of today's Grosspötzschau Church of the Resurrection was likely to have been built.
