The "Stalin's birthday cake", as the locals affectionately call the Academy of Sciences, is a striking example of Soviet architecture in the middle of Riga. The building's confectionery style makes you think you're in Moscow for a moment, but the view from above is clearly Riga - and it's definitely worth it. For 6 euros you can take the elevator up and then walk the last two floors, which will reward you with an impressive panorama at the end.

The building itself has an exciting history: originally intended as a collective farm house, it was finally inaugurated in 1960 as the headquarters of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. It is a relic from the era of socialist classicism, the architecture of which is based on the Moscow "Seven Sisters".

In addition to science, FM and TV broadcasts are also broadcast here - the antennas on the roof remind you how multifunctional a Soviet high-rise can be. And while you stand up there and look over the rooftops of Riga, you can easily imagine what life in this city must have been like back then.
