Beautiful view over the fields to the castle, the cath. Church and the old town of Höchstadt.

The extremely complicated and complex construction history of the castle was clarified in detail between 1998 and 2002 in anticipation of planned repair measures. The oldest building structure visible today dates back to Bishop Ekbert of Meran (1208-1236), who built a square keep on the city side; the associated ring wall and the palace have been demolished. At the end of the 13th century, the originally free-standing keep was incorporated into a ring wall, flush with the wall, with a building leaning against the west side. These buildings were expanded after 1378, probably in connection with the city's development. Prince-Bishop Albert of Wertheim (1399-1421) built a hall on the west side in 1410 (coat of arms with date). From 1572 to 1574 the castle was remodeled in the Renaissance style, and from 1711 to 1713 in the Baroque style by the prince-bishop's court architect Johann Dientzenhofer. Dientzenhofer standardized the building heights and openings.
