Castle with moat (not open) and estate located right next to the village. Nice walking area to stroll through the woods and meadows.
The castle dates back to at least the 12th century. The most famous resident was undoubtedly Joan Derk van der Capellen. Here he wrote his famous appeal to the people of the Netherlands: the Democratic Manifesto. He championed freedom of expression, open government and the integrity of civil servants and political authorities. In doing so, he has played an important role in the current democratic model.

Hiking
For more than 1000 years, the site of the Lordship of Appeltern has been continuously inhabited. The oldest written evidence of this can be found in a papal bull from 1134 which mentions the village of Appeltern and the castle. The site was probably inhabited even much longer, as Roman coins and fragments of Roman pottery and roof tiles have been found nearby.
