The southern district, which was largely built between 1875 and 1910, i.e. during the Wilhelminian period, has the most urban character of all parts of the inner city, which is also manifested in the usual height and number of floors. In addition to the district and regional court in the western north, the south quarter is also home to the centrally located Hessian State Archive. University buildings can be found on the north side (Sinology, Landgrafenhaus - Jura) and the south side (Savignyhaus - Jura) of Universitätsstraße and in the east of the quarter (Psychology). At the southern tip of the quarter is the 14-story high-rise Affenfelsen, which is not very popular with art historians for urban planning reasons. In contrast, the neighborhood's oldest buildings stand in the extreme north-east, at the base of Am Grün street.

In the north-west, the Südviertel in Barfusser Tor Street beyond Universitätsstraße reaches heights at the foot of the upper town. In the extreme east of the quarter is the Lahn island Auf der Weide with the Grüner Mühle in the north, in the south-west the quarter with the streets Schwanhof and Teichwiesenweg juts out a little over the Schwanallee.
