According to a local legend, a returning crusader, the knight Ludolf Morin, a participant in the 3rd Crusade from 1189 to 1192, had the church built as a replica of the "Church of the Holy Sepulchre" in Jerusalem. However, the construction of the church may also be due to the knight Wipert Morin, who could have come to Jerusalem as early as 1172/73 in the entourage of the Obotrite prince Pribislaw on his pilgrimage. It also tells of an oath made in Jerusalem: after a happy return home, to build such a church in their homeland.
