The place first appears in 1368 as Marggreuendorp, then around 1500 under the name Marckendorff. Although no written evidence of connections between the settlement and sovereigns can be found, the latter are likely to have acted as founders or feudal lords.

Markendorf's church is now an elongated, narrow rectangular hall with a square half-timbered brick roof tower in the west. There is an annex on the eastern part of the north side. If the ship consists of remarkably cleanly worked blocks of fieldstone, the masonry is more of a mix of fieldstone and brick with numerous repairs.

A closer look reveals a building seam on the south side, approximately in the middle of the nave, west of the rectangular portal. However, hardly any differences in the masonry quality can be observed on both sides, as the layers seem to continue more or less.

Today's openings are all changed. Remains of a small raised pointed arched window can still be seen on the south side, and on the north side there is both an added portal and the remains of another window above it.

These remains and the quality of the masonry indicate that the church was built in the 13th century. In fact, it was originally a complex of the complete type, consisting of a nave, a recessed chancel and a semicircular apse. But the openings were already changed during the reconstruction after the destruction in the Thirty Years' War. In the years 1724-26 the chancel and apse were demolished and the nave was extended to the east using the material recovered. At that time, a crypt and patron's lodge were also built in the north. It is possible that the current tower was also built in the course of this extensive work.
