The Church of San Pietro in Parma is first mentioned in a document dated April 26, 955: as it stands close to the main square of the city (today's Piazza Garibaldi), it is often referred to as San Pietro in foro or de platea, or the square.

It was completely rebuilt in Gothic style between 1418 and 1492 under the direction of Cristoforo Zaneschi.

Originally the church was led by two porter priests, but in 1516 the church was entrusted to the Collegiate Chapter of San Gerolamo.

In 1707 the canons had the building demolished to build a new one, designed by Ennemond Alexandre Petitot and completed in 1762 and rededicated by Alessandro Pisani, Bishop of Piacenza.

The chapter governing the church was dissolved by Napoleon Bonaparte with a decree dated December 30, 1811; it was reconstituted by Pope Pius IX with a letter dated September 1, 1852, but was finally suppressed by the Savoyard government in 1867.

In 1978 a window was opened in the facade, based on an original design by Petitot.
