The historical site of the Hof ten Houte consists of a square, medieval residential tower, which probably dates back to the second half of the 15th century (after 1468), and associated, now renovated farm buildings. As the original seat of a smaller lordship, the residential tower is a representative and well-preserved example of a noble residence from the heyday of this residential type. The prestige of this tower-shaped building came to the fore after the middle of the 15th century at the expense of the original defensive character.

The tower of the Hof Ten Houte, which was thoroughly renovated, dates from the end of the 13th century.

The Ten Houte district was once the cradle of Peizegem. It was very strategically located along the major road from Hainaut to the Scheldt (Briel), on the border between Brabant and Flanders. It was the last post before entering the large Buggenhout forest, a final resting place for travellers who could no longer reach Briel before nightfall.

Ten Houte was once a fortified stronghold, completely surrounded by ramparts. The tower is a donjon or residential tower. Donjons played an important role in daily life in the Middle Ages; they formed the economic, political, judicial and symbolic centre of the lordship. But first and foremost, the donjon was the lord's house where he led his family life and received people.
