    Hiking

Derbyshire had its Nelson’s Column only five years after Trafalgar, while Londoners had to wait a further 30 for theirs. The column stands 12 feet high (3.6 meters) on Birchin Edge, approximately 1,000 feet (305 meters) above sea level. It was erected in 1810 by John Brightman, who lived in Baslow.

    Running

A pretty gritstone edge at the southern end of the gritstone outcrops of the Dark Peak. Birchen is a popular area with east access from the Robin Hood pub. For a runner you can create great loops heading north from here towards Curbar and Froggatt or run the full Nine Edges challenge which normally finishes here.
The 3m high gritstone monument to Lord Nelson was built in 1810 and restored in the 1990s. The three large rocks that stand slightly away from the edge are known as the ship rocks and carved with the names of three of Nelson's ships.
