The church was extensively renovated and refurbished in 2015/16, and at Easter 2016 it was released again for services and visits. Everything has been renewed or restored, the church is now in perfect condition. A visit not to be missed when in Varde.

The town center of Varde is very attractive and inviting with a number of shops, boutiques, restaurants, cafés, exhibitions and museums - unfortunately, due to the many fires over the years, there are hardly any buildings from the Middle Ages left. The few buildings that were able to defy the flames are all the more interesting to admire. So the 11th century St. Jacob's Church, the "House of Sillasen" from 1797, the old town hall from 1872 and the Schultzke Gaard are definitely places to visit.

The nave, choir and apse of St. Jacobi Church date from the Romanesque period. The church tower was added in the late Middle Ages. In the period 1809-12, the church was extended with 2 side wings and thus got its ground plan as a cruciform church. The expansion of the church happened at the same time as the demolition of St. Nicolai Church.
