Think! "Ane and the Cow" or "Hedebo's Wife" - a statue in Varde
Hidden in the Kræmmerpassage not far from the town hall in Varde is a sculpture of a woman with a cow.

The builder of the Kræmmerpassage, Niels Christian Pedersen, worked as a shepherd boy from the age of seven. He was one of those who drove the cows to the Klit in the spring, where the cattle grazed on the heath. Pedersen made the leap from shepherd to successful contractor. In addition to the Kræmmerpassage, he also built the hotel in Varde and commissioned Hagedorn-Olsen.

To commemorate his humble origins and as a memorial to the hard-working peasant women, Pedersen donated the artwork and unveiled it at the inauguration of the shopping arcade in 1961. The plaque next to the memorial bears the text of a poem entitled "Hedebo's Wife", written by the former Vice -School Inspector Malling.

It is a hymn to a thrifty, hard-working woman who quietly and uncomplainingly takes care of children and cows, the apartment, stable and garden from morning to night, and at the same time sits singing at the spinning wheel in the evenings when everyone else is already asleep . For Malling (and certainly also for Pedersen) the monument should honor these hard-working women and encourage posterity to follow these women.

At the same time, "Hedebo's wife" symbolizes the work of those who cleared the landscape, settled it, wrested food from it, and the cohesion of country and city, because one cannot exist without the other.

The popular name of the statue is "Ane og koen", "Ane with a cow", after a story by Johannes V. Jensen, which is well known in Denmark and published in the book "Nye Himmerlands historier" in 1904. The farmer's wife Ane makes the long journey to the market in the next town with her only cow - not to sell her there, but solely to give her the opportunity to meet other cows.
