In the middle of the 14th century, the church was built on the site of the previous building as a three-aisled basilica in the brick Gothic style typical of Northern Europe in the Baltic Sea region.
Around 1500 it received a 127 m high tower, which was destroyed by lightning in 1543, which the Catholics who remained in Rostock saw as a punishment from God. The tower with spire was rebuilt by 1578, after it had been partially destroyed again by storms. With the height of 117 m then reached, it also served as an orientation marker from sea and land. In the following centuries, weather storms left their mark, which led to a comprehensive renovation of the basilica in 1902
