The lake is one of the purest of the great Italian lakes. In the distant past it was part of Lake Maggiore, whose water level was once much higher. The constant sand deposition of the River Toce has caused the separation of the two lakes. On this plain, called the Fondotoce, lies Fondovalle, which belongs to the municipality of Verbania. Today Lake Mergozzo is connected to Lake Maggiore by a 2.7 kilometer long canal.
