The gatekeepers at the Nabburg Gate guarded the entrance to the city. The upper floors of the towers housed detention cells, comparable to today's sobering-up cells. Inmates were usually only there at night; during the day they had to help with the construction and maintenance of the fortifications.

The complex, flanked by two towers, is the most beautiful gate in Amberg's city wall. This is due to the renovation carried out in the 16th century under Elector Ludwig VI, during which it was given the appearance that is reminiscent of a Renaissance castle today. Road traffic still leads through the Nabburger Tor today, but as a one-way street only in one direction. quermania.de/bayern/amberg/nabburger-tor.php

The Nabburger Tor was built in 1382 after the expansion of the city, this began in 1326. Its Renaissance appearance won the gate under Louis VI.
