Anyone hiking the circular trail along the Schalkenmehren Maar will pass a very special studio: that of chainsaw artist Konrad Scholzen. Directly on the shore, between quaint half-timbered houses and blooming meadows, impressive wooden sculptures are created here – from powerful wild boars and majestic eagles to detailed hunters and owls.
Each sculpture bears the marks of the chainsaw and tells its own story – raw, natural, and with a touch of the Wild West. The rough, yet precise processing of the wood gives each figure its own personality, which blends perfectly into the rugged, pristine nature of the Volcanic Eifel.
Konrad Scholzen, himself a master forester, knows how to recognize the structure and soul of the wood and shape it. The result is impressive, unique pieces that fit perfectly into the landscape around the maar and bring hikers closer to a little piece of wilderness and craftsmanship.
A real insider tip for anyone who wants to combine art and nature – and a lovely stop on a hike around the maar.
