                      Around 1255, Konrad von Horneck donated his Horneck Castle to the Teutonic Order. Since the reign of Eberhard von Seinsheim (1420-1443), it served as the residence of the Teutonic Masters. After its destruction in the Peasants' War in 1525, the residence was relocated to Mergentheim. The reconstruction of Horneck as a Renaissance castle was completed in 1533. It was redesigned in the Baroque style starting in 1724. Owned by Württemberg since 1805, Horneck was used, among other things, as a barracks and sold several times. Under Dr. Ludwig Roemheld, it became a renowned sanatorium. The building served as a military hospital during both World Wars, was a pulmonary sanatorium from 1946 to 1957, and has been a cultural and meeting center for the Transylvanian Saxons since 1960.
