The English Schans is a fortification used by English troops during the Siege of Grol ( Groenlo ) by Prince Frederik Hendrik van Oranje in 1627 . This redoubt was built by the English mercenaries and served as a base during the siege of Groenlo.

Schanzen are earthen ramparts that were built for cannons during the Eighty Years' War. This rampart was restored to its original state in 2002. Schanzen are part of the siege line from the Eighty Years' War. The cannons stood on these earthen ramparts, which were up to six meters high.
