Leipzig's success story in cycling began in 1882. The cycling enthusiast Ernst Pinkert made the central promenade paths of his zoological garden available for a penny-farthing race. He created the first cycle track in Central Germany. In 1884, the Leipzig Bicycle Club inaugurated a special railway with a modern grandstand on the north-western edge of the Rosental. The first German track championships took place here in August 1884; at the same time, the German Cyclists' Association was founded. The cement cycle track built in 1892 by the Sportplatz Leipzig club on today's small exhibition center became a high-speed facility after several conversions. Until it was demolished in 1938, three world, five European and countless German championships were held there. The success story continued on the Alfred-Rosch-Kampfbahn, built in 1949. Today's Leipzig velodrome has seen three world title fights, thirty times the Grand Prix in the sprint, world championship revenge, countless GDR and German championships as well as high-class standing races.

Olympic medals and world championship titles from Leipzig athletes bear witness to the cycling stronghold of Leipzig, in which the 1990 unification of the cycling associations of the GDR and the FRG took place and in 2009 the Association of German Cyclists celebrated its 125th anniversary.
