Built around 1250 as "Veste" by the counts of Altenbamberg, Gerhard and Rupert. In 1338, ¾ of the castle and village were pledged to the archbishops of Mainz and ¼ to the counts of Sponheim. In 1457, the last count, Otto, sold all rights to the elector Friedrich I. von der Pfalz.Changes in ownership followed.During the Thirty Years' War, the Swedes destroyed the castle in 1635.Further destruction of the restored or preserved parts by the French in 1656 and 1668 and finally in 1796.Restored in 1980, some walls rebuilt.
