During the great city fire of 1862, the neighboring Grote Kerk burned down to the ground. The tower was also affected. The bells that fell during the fire were rescued and temporarily stored in this place. This has earned it the name Klokkenplas (bell square).
It is a small, quiet oasis in the middle of downtown Enschede. It is believed that Enschede Castle stood on the square in the 12th century.
