With its 1,145 hectares, the Wässernach Valley conservation area offers protection to many rare animal species. The intact biotope is also a habitat for protected plants.

The Wässernach rises at an altitude of about 365 m above sea level in the Schweinfurt Rhön (Hesselbacher Waldland), in the Rundwiese mixed forest area between Schonungen-Reichmannshausen and Schonungen-Löffelsterz, about 150 m east of the SW 4 leading from the Wettringen part of the Stadtlauringen market to Reichmannshausen. Its source in the Reichmannshausen district is only about 300 m north of the municipal border to Riedbach, which is also the district border between the Schweinfurt district and the Haßberge district. It reaches the northwestern tip of the Haßfurt district of Wülflingen and flows through the Am Mahlgrund field on the western edge of the town, accompanied by dense woodland. It enters the town at the volunteer fire department house, crosses the Oberthereser Weg and flows through it, parallel first to the Gleißnergasse and then to the Ringgasse. It passes under the B 26 and the tracks of the Bamberg-Rottendorf railway line and finally flows into the Main from the right and north-northwest, just under a hundred metres south of Wülflingen at approximately Main kilometer 353.1, a good kilometre below the mouth of the Nassach at an altitude of 216 m above sea level. It is 14.3 km long in total. (Wikipedia)

Beautiful, quiet forest. The Wässernach river is carrying very little water at the moment.
