The Phoenix Lake in Dortmund-Hörde is a result of one of the largest urban development projects in Germany and symbolizes the structural change in the region. It is located on the site of a former ThyssenKrupp AG steelworks (formerly Hoesch), which was closed after around 160 years of operation. The area covers a total of around 100 hectares and has been converted into an attractive local recreation area. The planning phase lasted five years, and the construction of the lake itself was realized in another five years, with flooding of the lake beginning on October 1, 2010.

The project was implemented by the Phoenix-See development company - Phoenix-See 21 -, a subsidiary of Dortmunder Stadtwerke AG - DSW 21 - in collaboration with the Emschergenossenschaft and on behalf of the city of Dortmund. The city was also responsible for the urban planning concept of the lake project. DSW21 is responsible for marketing the vacant building plots. The operation of the Phoenix-See local recreation area is ensured by the Dortmund city drainage system.

The lake is 1.2 kilometers long, 320 meters wide and has a water surface of 24 hectares. Attractive residential areas, commercial and office space as well as a promenade with restaurants have been created around the lake. The lake offers a variety of opportunities for water sports enthusiasts, and the surrounding green spaces invite you to enjoy activities such as walking, jogging, cycling and skating.

The historical significance of the Phoenix Lake lies in its transformation from an industrial location to a place for recreation and leisure activities, which reflects the change in the city of Dortmund and the Ruhr area from heavy industry to a modern service and leisure society.
