Dortmund's Main Cemetery, with its founding in 1908 and the subsequent far-reaching decisions on the development of the cemetery system in 1912, was conceived as a park-like and landscaped recreational area for the public. This vision had to be temporarily suspended due to the social and economic consequences of the First World War, but it took concrete shape from 1920 onwards with the horticultural design of the site. The official opening took place on July 16, 1921, with the emphasis on the Main Cemetery being both a place for the dead and a recreational area for the living. Today, the Main Cemetery, with its over 8,200 trees, is considered one of Dortmund's botanical highlights and is an important habitat for various animal species. With an area of approximately 135 hectares, it is one of the largest cemeteries in Germany and Dortmund's largest green space. The bridge shown here is the so-called valley bridge, which leads over the valley ditch.
