The stormy Kattegat and the sandbanks off Anholt have always been a threat to shipping. Therefore, in 1560, King Frederick II ordered the erection of a lighthouse. Initially, a simple lighthouse was used: a wooden structure with an iron basket, fueled by wood. The Danish name for this is papegøjefyr (parrot fire), because the fire basket resembled a parrot's cage. In 1623, a coal-fired rocking lighthouse was built. In 1785, a 35-meter-high coal-fired lighthouse was built. This tower received a lantern in 1805. In 1881, the current stone tower, "Anholt Lighthouse," was erected and equipped with a Fresnel lens. The lighthouse is a listed building.

The Anholt Lighthouse is Denmark's oldest functioning lighthouse and, at 42 meters, the second tallest in Denmark, surpassed only by the Skagen Lighthouse at 46 meters.
