Who knows where the Vicaria, the "official" prison of Palermo was located before the Ucciardone? Not all, I think. Yet Palermitans and tourists pass by it every day, consuming a sandwich with spleen or enjoying an ice cream on the go. In past centuries, on the other hand, people passed through it with fear and horror, seeing the hands of prisoners clinging to the gratings of the windows or the cries that could be heard from time to time coming from the innermost part.
We are along the Cassaro, at Piazza Marina, right in front of the beautiful Fontana del Garraffo: that building with such a severe mass and that anomalous colonnade closed by a beautiful gate is the Palazzo delle Finanze. A monument now silent, since it has been practically abandoned. And yet, that was the old prison of the Vicaria, i.e. the ancient prison of Palermo.
