After the Second World War, the square and the Kröpeliner Street named after the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, before the former hop market in 1961 received its final name University Square. In the middle of the square is the well of zest for life (popularly mostly porn springs called, which even has the consequence that many newcomers do not know the original name), which was created in 1985 by the sculptors Jo Jastram and Reinhard Dietrich.
