In the summer of 1772, Goethe lived in a small apartment in the house of the Chamber Court Prosecutor Georg Wilhelm von Ludolf.
His roommate was Jakob Heinrich von Born (1750-1782), an acquaintance from Goethe's time as a student in Leipzig.
In keeping with family tradition, Goethe was to complete a legal internship at the Imperial Chamber Court.

The house Zum Reichsapfel or Zur Sonne is a half-timbered house in the old town of Wetzlar. The building is located in a dominant urban location at the south-western end of the Kornmarkt. For artistic and urban planning reasons, it is a protected monument, and it is also part of the historical old town as a whole.
The three-storey half-timbered house was built in 1607 and restored in 1981. In the 19th century it served as a brewery and inn, today it is a residential building.

What is striking about the half-timbered house, built in 1607, is the richly decorated bay window. According to the inscription on the left window sill, the house was called “Zur Sonne” until the end of the 18th century. Later it was called “Zum Reichsapfel” after the relief on the central beam of the bay window. On both sides of the eaves, the frame beams bear psalms as inscriptions.
Today the house is used as a residential building.
