The University Library in Warsaw (BUW) was established in 1816 with the establishment of the University of Warsaw. Its first director was Samuel Linde. Over the years, it has undergone numerous changes, including closure after the November Uprising, loss of collections to Russia, and destruction during World War II. The new library building, designed by Marek Budzyński and Zbigniew Badowski, was opened in 1999 in Powiśle. BUW is one of the largest academic libraries in Poland and a pioneer in purchasing e-books on request.
