Part of the surviving Baroque fortification of Forchheim is the Zwinger Bastion (built in 1657 - after the Thirty Years' War) with a wall from the Bastion of the Saltorturm to the rest of the northern moated castle (protection of the Wiesentkanal exit).
A small hint, no one knows that, as I can remember from my childhood: In the context of the construction of the RMD-channel - the dammed in Forchheimer area as running water of the Regnitz and Wiesent - the groundwater level rose sharply. At that time, this required a backfilling of the upstream ditches by several meters (4 m?). Of course, this was a lot more powerful in terms of fastening technology. The fortress ditches used to be flooded over the Wiesent canals in times of threat.
