The Mainbernheimer Tor (also Spitaltor, Gräbentor) is located in the west of the old town of Iphoefer. It is the only gate that led into the city's moat district. The gate was built in the first half of the 16th century as the youngest permanent part of the fortifications and dates back to the disputes between the town and the smaller town of Mainbernheim. There was a dispute about the location and course of the Hohe Strasse, which promised the residents high returns in the form of customs duties. However, Iphofen was unable to assert itself against the older rights of Mainbernheim.
