The Maartenskerk in Kollum is a medieval church originally dedicated to Saint Martin.

This imposing church dates back to the mid-15th century, and I found it absolutely stunning and beautiful.

The original church, which was built of tuff in the early 12th century, has completely disappeared. Only the tower, also built of tufa stone at the beginning of the 13th century, has been partially preserved. The current church dates from the mid-15th century, when the tower was also raised with a brick section. The church then got its Gothic appearance. After the choir, the nave was built with an aisle on the north side of the church. In 1661 lightning struck the church. The roof was then renewed and the tower was fitted with a needle spire. In 1840 the windows of the church were enlarged. In 1853 a vestry was built against this aisle. The church bells were cast by Johan Schonenborch in 1526 and by Hans Falck in 1618, from Wikipedia:

Hans Valck, from Nuremberg, has made clocks for several churches. He had his workshop in Leeuwarden on the square near the Oldehove.

Kollum is a nice village, unfortunately not enough time to walk through it.
