The city library, formerly the diocesan and district library, was inaugurated on February 10, 1956 after decades of discussions. The main library is housed in a building designed by Sven Ahlbom, which houses reading rooms, an auditorium, a music department and a children's library. The library had its origins in the seminary and diocesan library. The scope of this collection increased considerably in the early 17th century due to the personal interest of Bishop Johannes Rudbeckius.
