This basilisk (yes, exactly this one) adorned the old Wettstein Bridge as a guard. New construction of the New Wettstein Bridge on its foundation pillars (1991).

      Basilisk - Lange Erlen

After the first reconstruction of the Wettstein Bridge in 1936, the four bridge keepers no longer had room on their pillars high above the Rhine. The city was looking for a new home for them and so the Lange Erlen Zoo was given a specimen of this species as a gift. The basilisk delighted visitors there until 1995.
The Basel building authorities wanted to place a bridge keeper at the bridgehead of the Wettstein Bridge, which was rebuilt in the same year. So the city of Basel bought this basilisk from the Erlen Association for a proud 100,000 francs.
It was to be 13 years before another dragon found its way into the park in mid-2008. This dragon had previously been through a real odyssey before it came to sit on the current pedestal at the entrance to the zoo. The Koechlin family, the owners, thankfully donated their basilisk to the zoo and also paid for the cost of the pedestal and transport. The sculpture, which weighs over 5 tons, was lifted to its current location using a crane from the Unold company in Basel.
