Both north and south of the mouth of the Cecina river there is the Biogenetic Nature Reserve called "Tomboli di Cecina"; commissioned in 1839 by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopold II to protect agriculture with a pine forest from the violence and saltiness of the sea winds, it extends along the coast for 15 kilometers with a depth that varies from 100 to 600 metres.
The Reserve, which is one of the most beautiful Italian forests, rich in dense and varied vegetation which differs from the sea towards the hinterland with characteristic plant species, is also a resting and breeding area for numerous animal species and is a paradise for walkers or cyclists who can follow it in any direction on small paths or on a straight and wide dirt road. It is equipped with benches and tables for picnics, but has no fountains or toilets.
Entry (free) and transit (prohibited for motorized vehicles) are not subject to restrictions.
It can be covered mainly using the network of paths in the bush, partly also cycle paths and - in short stretches - paved roads with little traffic, starting from Via dei Cavalleggeri Nord, in Marina di Bibbona (from South to North) or from Via Nuova dei Cavalrymen (in the opposite direction). Or you can start from the mouth of the river in Marina di C., reachable by means of a cycle path from Cecina station
