In Breda, Sebastiaan van der Schoot was the owner of the De Anker brewery. Because the peat workers liked a beer, an inn was soon built in the peat area, which bore the name of the Van der Schoot brewery: “In den Anker”. It was built around 1630 and the inn is still there. It is located on the Rucphenseweg, an old through route between Zundert and Rucphen. The innkeeper was a toll collector for this road that was built in 1856 for some time. “In den Anker” has been owned by the De Beer family since 1861. Over the years, many passers-by have visited this inn for a drink or a beer. When you enter “In den Anker”, you imagine yourself back in time. The taproom has always remained the same. A large mantelpiece, where the fire used to burn, and a small Mechelen bar. Hikers and passers-by are always sitting at the round table having a drink. At weekends the converted stable is usually open and the café is closed.
