Proper maintenance of the canals was of vital importance. Every peat operator who bordered on a canal with his extraction area, and who used it, paid the 'vaartmeester' for the maintenance of that channel. Once an area was emptied of peat, there was no need for maintenance. Many dilapidated canals later became through paths such as the Schuitvaartjaagpad. Dilapidated routes can also still be recognized by plot separations. For example, the edge of the forest at this location marks an old canal. However, a large part of the canals have disappeared.
