This area was designated as a tree lined square and a place to play bowls in 1622. It was laid out on an old area of marshland previously used as a dump and firing range.

The first houses were built on the southern side of the square between 1699 & 1700, and it was named Queen Square in 1702 after Queen Anne.

The statue of William III was erected in 1736.

Today it's a lovely place to walk or take a break. The square is sometimes used as a venue for a big screen and communal party for events like the Olympics or world cups.
